Peter Pan Dress

I finished my Poison Apple outfit a few days ahead of schedule so I decided to do one more project for my trip to Disneyworld.  Peter Pan has always been a personal favorite (something about flying!) so I decided to make a dress inspired by the film.

I took the above picture thinking I would make the dress with fabric.  Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to the fabric content.  It was 65% polyester which doesn't bleach well.  So instead I ran to Goodwill and picked up a Men's X-Large black, 100% cotton dress shirt.  After altering it to fit my body by sewing up the side seams, I was ready to decorate my dress.

Items you'll need:
Bleach
A spray bottle
Contact paper
Cardstock
An exacto knife (the crafting kind)
 Paint bowl and water bowl
Swarovski Hotfix Crystals
White, blue, purple, and pink acrylic paint
A Hotfix tool
An item of clothing that is 100% cotton
Vinegar
Iron and ironing board

I taped a 8.5" by 11" piece of Contact paper to the Cardstock and ran it through the printer.  I can free hand relatively well...but this was WAY easier, much faster, and more accurate.  I then used the exacto knife to cut out Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael.  Very firmly I attached the contact paper onto the shirt.

I threw a giant trash bag over my dressform and then buttoned the shirt over it.  I sprayed an insane amount of bleach over it, waited for 45 minutes, then washed it out.  Here it is after being rinsed and dried:

The details came out pretty well!  But I was only half done.  I wanted a galaxy effect.  So I took a sponge and went to town adding purple, blue, and pink around the bleach.  After it looked sufficiently "galaxy" I took an old toothbrush dipped in white acrylic and did some flicks to create stars.  I also used a tiny brush to add a few more big stars.  After that it just needed to be set!

To set the acrylic I used a mixture of half vinegar, half water in a spray bottle.  Segment by segment I sprayed then ironed.  I repeated this all over the shirt about three times.  It was REALLY stinky.  Unfortunately it did not return the shirt to it's original soft quality as I had read it would, but it did feel a lot better and it did set the acrylic.  I threw it in the washer and drier the next day to make sure it had set (and to get rid of the vinegar smell).

I added the Hotfix crystals to the collar, starting with the largest in the point and using smaller and smaller crystals as I neared the neckline.

I took a picture near Captain Hook in the England section of Epcot.  Peter Pan was on the roof, but it was far too hot to keep taking pictures in the sun, so I was very happy with this one picture.
